Welcoming refugees to Calgary

Post Date: Thursday, September 24, 2015

Calgary has a proud history of being a welcoming and open city. We are also a place where we help our neighbours. As the conflict in Syria continues, Canadians have said that we need to do more as a country for these refugees and all those who see sanctuary. We need better policy at the federal level, but we also need to be ready to welcome these folks at a community level. We all play a role.

Refugees will continue to come to Canada, and the majority of these folks will be coming to cities across the country, including Calgary. My colleagues at The City of Calgary have been working hard to ensure the support services we have in place will continue to assist refugees, but as a community, we have a collective responsibility to welcome these folks.

Over the past few weeks, my office has seen an outpouring from Calgarians offering their support, asking how to help and where to begin. Those looking to provide help can visit calgary.ca/syria for additional information.
